In a game of Magic, the player takes on the role of a Planeswalker. Planeswalkers can move through worlds and battle with other players by summoning creatures, casting spells and using artefacts depicted on trading cards drawn from a player’s deck. A player generally, but not always, defeats their opponent by summoning creatures to attack and casting spells to inflict damage on their opponent’s ‘life total’. The object of the game is to reduce your opponent’s life total from 20 to 0.

Magic: The Gathering (often abbreviated MTG) can be played by two or more players, either in person with printed cards from booster boxes and other products or on a computer or mobile device with virtual cards through Magic: The Gathering Online or Magic: The Gathering Arena. The trading card game can be played in various rule formats - constructed or limited. Limited format gameplay requires players to spontaneously build a playable deck from random cards with a deck of 40 cards. In constructed format, players create decks from cards they own, usually with a minimum of 60 cards per deck – this is the most widely played format.
